The Action Pool Tour (APT) held its 9th event of the 2011-2012 Session at VIP Billiards in Catonsville, MD on the weekend of May 5-6, 2012.  This was the first ever Action Pool Tour 8-ball event; drawing a strong field of 55 players.  The field included the likes of Matt Krah, Shaun Wilkie, Alan Duty, Brian Deska and Brett Stottlemyer just to name a few.

Play began at approximately 1:15pm on Saturday, May 5th with no significant early upsets until the 2nd round when Dan Madden sent Brian Deska to the one-loss side by a score of 7-4.  By the end of Saturday, only twelve players remained; four on the winners’ side and eight on the one-loss side.  The winners’ side final four featured Brett Stottlemyer, Shaun Wilkie, Chuck Sampson, and Matt Krah while the one-loss side final eight included Alan Duty, Dan Madden, Rafael Reyes, Manny Orino, RJ Carmona, Donny Perryman, Rick Glasscock and Mike Slagle.

Sunday began on the one-loss side with Duty downing Madden 5-2 while Perryman squeaked by Carmona 5-4 and Glasscock shut out Slagle 5-0.  Reyes was unable to make it to the venue in time and was forced to forfeit to Orino.  The next round saw Perryman defeat Glasscock 5-1 while Duty handled Orino 5-3.

Meanwhile on the winners' side, Wilkie took apart Stottlemyer 7-3 and Krah got by Sampson 7-4.  The next round featured Wilkie and Krah for the hot seat.  These two players had met many times in the past with some very close matches.  However, Krah would have none of it as he dominated Wilkie 7-2 to earn a seat in the finals.

Back on the one-loss side, Perryman scored a narrow victory over Sampson 5-4 but was promptly eliminated by Stottlemyer 5-1 who had also just eliminated Duty 5-3.  This set up Stottlemyer and Wilkie to battle for the final spot in the finals.  With Wilkie leading 4-3 in this race to 5 format, Stottlemyer dissected the next rack to make it a hill-hill match-up.  Stottlemyer then broke the final rack and began to surgically cut threw the clusters.  With only two relatively routine shots left, he got out of position and was forced to play a difficult thin cut which he missed.  Wilkie took full advantage and ran the remainder of the rack to win 5-4.  This set up a Krah-Wilkie rematch in which Wilkie would have to defeat Krah twice in the true double elimination format.  Krah quickly jumped out to a commanding lead but couldn't seem to close out the set.  Wilkie chipped away at the lead and the match was soon 6-5 in favor of Krah.  However, Krah got back on track in the next rack and defeated Wilkie 7-5 for the win.  The complete bracket is posted on the Results Page.

Other notable results of the event include the top female finisher, the 2nd Chance Tournament, and the Break & Run contest.  Five (5) females: Ann Reynolds, Jess Didier, Hye-Jin Song, Laurie Bunn, and Jackie Rivera competed in the event in which the top placing female would win a $75 cash prize.  Jackie Rivera prevailed to win the top female honor.

The Break & Run contest, which had a payout of $160 per ball, was conducted on Saturday night.  Rafael Reyes had the winning ticket and the opportunity at the cash.  Everyone crowded the table as Reyes plowed the 10-ball rack but failed to pocket a ball.  The total purse will progressively roll into the next event with a total payout of $175 per ball!

Finally, Steve Zeigler showed up on Sunday to go undefeated in the 2nd Chance Tournament to take home $140.  Coming in 2nd was Tour Director Ozzy Reynolds who earned $80, followed by Young-Seok Kim in 3rd with $40.  The complete bracket is posted on the Results Page.
