complete b.s. in the finals!

The Action Pool Tour (APT) held its 7th event of the 2012-2013 Session at the legendary Q-Master Billiards in VA Beach, VA on the weekend of March 30-31, 2013.  The 10-ball event drew a strong field of 55 players including the likes of Brandon Shuff, Mike Davis, Brett Stottlemyer, Kevin West, Eric Moore, Tim Colvin, and Dominic Noe just to name a few.

Play began at approximately 12:00 noon on Saturday and continued until approximately 10:30pm at which time there were only 12 players remaining; four on the winners’ side and eight on the one-loss side.  The winners’ side final four included RJ Carmona, Brandon Shuff, Reymart Lim and Danny Mastermaker while the one-loss side consisted of Kevin West, Dan Madden, Tim Colvin, Brett Stottlemyer, Bill Duggan, Ozzy Reynolds, Dominic Noe and Larry Kressel.

Day #2 on the winners’ side began with Shuff dominating Carmona 8-3 and Lim surprising Mastermaker 8-5.  This set up Shuff vs. Lim for the hot seat.  Lim put up little resistance however as Shuff won easily by a score of 8-2 and earned a seat in the finals.

Meanwhile on the one-loss side, West eliminated Madden 6-4, Stottlemyer defeated Colvin 6-3, Duggan took care of Reynolds 6-3 and Kressel knocked out Noe 6-4.  Kressel moved on to edge Duggan 6-4 while Stottlemyer got by West easily 6-1.  Stottlemyer moved on to continue his dominance by eliminating Carmona 6-2 while Kressel defeated his hometown friend Mastermaker 6-4.  This set up Stottlemyer and Kressel in the quarter-final match in which the winner would move on to face Lim in the semi-final.  Although it was anticipated to be a close contest, Kressel made several uncharacteristic mistakes and Stottlemyer took full advantage as he eliminated Kressel 6-2.  Stottlemyer then proved to be too much for Lim in the semi-final match as he won 6-4 and earned the right to face Shuff in the finals.

Just before the final match, Shuff jokingly said, “There is a lot of B.S. in the finals!”  He was, of course, referring to the initials of himself and his opponent.  Stottlemyer would have to defeat Shuff twice in the true double elimination format. The first set would be a race to 8 and the second set, if necessary, would be a race to 6.  The first set was close the entire way and eventually, Shuff found himself ahead 7-6 with a chance to run out and put the match away.  After making a great combination shot, he faced a relatively difficult cut shot down the rail on the 4-ball.  Due to the layout of the remaining balls, he would likely run out and win the tournament if he could slice in the 4-ball.  Everyone looked on in anticipation as he called the shot and pulled the trigger.  However, the 4-ball hung in the pocket and gave Stottlemyer a great opportunity as he ran the table and tied the match 7-7.  It was also Stottlemyer’s turn to break in the alternating break format.  After crushing the rack, a ball went down and the table layed wide open.  He pounced on his chance and ran the table to win 8-7 force a second and deciding set.

Although Stottlemyer seemed to have the momentum, Shuff regrouped and played strong in the second set.  Although this match also remained close the entire way, Shuff put Stottlemyer away in the end by a score of 6-4 to earn his first Action Pool Tour victory of the 2012-2013 Session and the $1,000 1st place prize.  The complete bracket is posted on the Results Page.

Other notable results of the weekend included the top female finisher, the Break & Run contest and the 2nd Chance Tournament.  Six (6) females: Jacki Duggan, Daisy Blancaflor, Sarah Thomas, Nikka Angeles, Debbie Davis and Cheryl Pritchard competed in the event in which the top placing female would earn a $100 cash prize.  In the end, Pritchard prevailed to take home top female honors and the $100 cash prize.

The Break & Run contest, which had a payout of $135 per ball, was conducted on Saturday night.  Kenny Miller had the winning ticket and elected to shoot himself.  Miller plowed the 10-ball rack and made a ball which allowed him to begin shooting for the cash.  His first shot was a difficult but makeable cut on the 1-ball down the rail.  He called the shot and pulled the trigger but missed by a significant margin.  The total purse will progressively roll into the next event with a total payout of $180 per ball.

The 2nd Chance Tournament began on Sunday at approximately 12:00pm with 16 participants.  In the end, Mike Davis prevailed by defeating Tim Colvin.  Davis took home $200 while Colvin pocketed $100.  Coming in 3rd was Ozzy Reynolds earning $50 and Tom Zippler in 4th earning $25.  The complete bracket is posted on the Results page.
