brian deska wins the 7th annual bob stocks memorial 9-ball open!

The Action Pool Tour (APT) held its 2nd event of the 2012-2013 Session at First Break Cafe in Sterling, VA on the weekend of November 3-4, 2012. This event was the 7th Annual Bob Stocks Memorial 9-Ball Open which is held each year at First Break Cafe. The event drew an impressive field of 62 players including the likes of 2012 US Mosconi Cup Team Member - Brandon Shuff, Mike Davis, Brett Stottlemyer, and Brian Deska just to name a few.
Play began at approximately 1:00pm on Saturday, November 3rd and continued until approximately 1:30am with only one significant upset with Tuan Chau sending tour favorite Brett Stottlemyer to the one-loss side by a score of 7-2. By the end of Day #1, twelve players remained; eight on the winners’ side and four on the one-loss side. The winners’ side final eight included Dan Madden, Tuan Chau, Will Moon, Brian Deska, Greg Sabins, Mike Davis, Paul Helms and Brandon Shuff while the one-loss side consisted of Sergey Bolotin, Brett Stottlemyer, Sean Sporleder and Dominic Noe.
Day #2 began on Sunday, November 4th with Madden edging Chau 7-5, Deska dominating Moon 7-3, Davis getting by Sabins 7-5 and Shuff defeating Helms 7-4. The next winners’ side round saw Deska defeat Madden 7-2 while Davis sent Shuff west by a score of 7-4. This set up Deska vs. Davis for the hot seat in which Deska won 7-4 and earned a seat in the finals for the 3rd consecutive year.
Meanwhile on the one-loss side, Chau eliminated Sporleder 6-3 while Sabins defeated Bolotin, Stottlemyer eliminated Helms, and Noe beat Moon, all by a score of 6-2. The next one-loss side round saw Stottlemyer double Sabins 6-3 and Chau eliminated Noe 6-4. Madden’s run soon ended at the hands of Stottlemyer 6-3 and Chau was also finished off by Shuff 6-3. Shuff then moved on to eliminate Stottlemyer 6-4. He then moved on to face Davis for the right to meet Deska in the finals. However, Davis would not have it as he defeated Shuff again 6-4.
Ironically, this set up a Deska vs. Davis rematch from last year’s Bob Stocks Memorial 9-Ball Open. However, the roles were reversed this year with Deska undefeated and Davis coming out of the one-loss side. Davis would have to defeat Deska twice in the true double elimination format. Although this was sure to be a great match, Deska took an early lead and never relented. In the end, he prevailed with a 7-2 victory and claimed the 62-player tournament victory. The complete bracket is now posted on the Results Page.
Other notable results of the event include the top female finisher, the Break & Run contest and the 2nd Chance Tournament. Ten (10) females: Shanna Lewis, Ann Reynolds, Cheryl Sporleder, Lai Li, Pauline Mattes, Tonya Schetrompf, Nicole Vincent, Charlene Harvey, Debbie Davis and Meredith Lynch competed in the event in which the top placing female would earn a $100 cash prize. In the end, Meredith Lynch prevailed to take home top female honors and the $100 cash prize.
The Break & Run contest, which had a payout of $60 per ball, was conducted on Saturday night. Steven Quan had the winning ticket and elected to have Brandon Shuff shoot on his behalf. Everyone crowded the table as Shuff plowed the 10-ball rack. Although he pocketed a ball on the break, the cue ball also found its way to the side pocket; ending his attempt. The total purse will progressively roll into the next event with a total payout of $75 per ball.
The 2nd Chance Tournament began on Sunday at 12:30pm with 18 participants. Tour Director, Ozzy Reynolds, went undefeated to claim the $180 prize. Coming in 2nd was Matt Shilinski earning $100, followed by Rick Glasscock in 3rd earning $50 and Cheryl Sporleder in 4th winning $25.
