The Action Pool Tour (APT) in association with First Break Café in Sterling, VA held The 6th Annual Bob Stocks Memorial 9-Ball Open on October 29-30, 2011. This was the second event of the 2011-2012 APT Session and despite snow and ice that rained down Friday night and Saturday, an impressive and strong field of 51 players showed up to compete.
Play continued late into Saturday night until only twelve players remained: eight on the winners’ side and four on the one-loss side. The final eight on the winners’ side included Eddie Abraham, Jeremy Perkins, Matt Clatterbuck, Mike Davis, Fred Scott, Brian Deska, Kevin West, and Alan Duty while the one-loss side included Ozzy Reynolds, Curtis Branker, Shaun Wilkie, and Brandon Shuff. On the 2nd day of play, Abraham narrowly escaped Perkins 9-8 as Davis defeated Clatterbuck 9-5, Deska downed Scott 9-4, and Duty got by West 9-6. The next winners’ side round saw Davis defeat Abraham 9-7 while Deska downed Duty 9-6. This set the stage for the Davis vs. Deska hot seat match-up. Although it remained relatively competitive throughout, Davis prevailed 9-6 to earn a seat in the finals.
The one-loss side semi-final match consisted of Abraham, who had just eliminated Wilkie 7-5, to face Deska. Although this was expected to be a great match-up, Abraham seemed to be unable to get a rhythm and was trounced 7-1. This would set the stage for a Davis vs. Deska rematch in which Deska would have to beat Davis twice in the true double-elimination format. Davis jumped out to an early lead but Deska fought back to keep the match close. As the match drew on, both players seemed to be fatigued as they made numerous uncharacteristic errors. With the match tied 8-8, Deska had only a routine eight ball and nine ball remaining to force a final set. However, he inexplicably missed the eight ball which allowed Davis to pocket the remaining balls and win the event.
Other notable results of the event include the top female finisher, the 2nd Chance Tournament winner, and the result of the Break & Run contest. Four females, Shanna Lewis, Ann Reynolds, Lai Li, and Megan Fort, all finished in the same level of the bracket to force a playoff for the $75 top female prize. Lai Li prevailed and for the 2nd time, earned the top female honor. The Break & Run contest, which had an available payout of $70 per ball, was conducted on Saturday afternoon. Ilir Jaho had the winning ticket and the opportunity at the cash. He broke a 10-ball rack and pocketed a ball which allowed him to begin and earn $70 for each legally pocketed ball thereafter. Having no shot on the 1-ball, he attempted a carom off of the 1-ball to pocket the 3-ball in the side. He missed by only fractions of an inch to end his bid. The total purse will progressively roll into the next event. Finally, after going two-and-out in the main event, Rafael Reyes came back on Sunday and went undefeated through a 13-player field to win the 2nd Chance Tournament and earn $150. The completed brackets are posted online at www.actionpooltour.com/results.
The tour would like to thank all of the players who participated in this event despite the snow and ice that rained down Friday night and Saturday. A special thank you also goes out to Anthony Luong, Michael Veve, and the entire staff of First Break Cafe for providing a fantastic venue and equipment. We look forward to returning to this room many more times in the future for some more great Action!
