brett stottlemyer outlasts rob saez in a 63-player field at vip billiards in catonsville, md!

The Action Pool Tour (APT) held its 12th event of the 2011-2012 Session at VIP Billiards in Catonsville, MD on the weekend of August 11-12, 2012. In the midst of summer when participation is usually low, this 10-ball event drew a very impressive field of 63 players including the likes of Mike Davis, Brandon Shuff, Shaun Wilkie, Brian Deska, and Rob Saez just to name a few.
Play began at approximately 1:00pm on Saturday, August 11th with no significant early upsets. By the end of Saturday, only twelve (12) players remained; four (4) on the winners’ side and eight (8) on the one-loss side. The winners’ side final four consisted of Mike Davis, Brett Stottlemyer, Shaun Wilkie and Brian Deska while the one-loss side included Rick Glasscock, Ozzy Reynolds, Brandon Shuff, Rob Saez, Rob Metz, Shawn Toni, Joe Cataldi and Larry Kressel.
Sunday began on the winners’ side with a much anticipated live stream match between Davis and Stottlemyer in which Stottlemyer captured an 8-5 victory. With Deska defeating Wilkie 8-6, the stage was set for Stottlemyer vs. Deska for the hot seat. Although this was sure to be a close match, Stottlemyer would not relent as he sent Deska west by a score of 8-4 and earned his rightful place in the finals.
Meanwhile on the one-loss side, Glasscock defeated Reynolds 6-4, Cataldi upset Kressel 6-3, Toni squeaked by Metz 6-5 and Saez eliminated Shuff in a hill-hill victory. The next round was not as close as Saez eliminated Glasscock 6-2 and Cataldi took care of Toni 6-3. Cataldi then moved on to get eliminated by Wilkie 6-1 while Saez squeaked out another 6-5 win to eliminate Davis. Shooting terrific, Saez moved over to face Wilkie and took care of business with a 6-4 win. This set up a Saez vs. Deska rematch from the previous day in which Deska won the hill-hill match. Again, they went hill-hill but the result was a bit different with Saez claiming the win and the right to face Stottlemyer in the finals.
Saez would have to defeat Stottlemyer twice in the true double elimination format. The first set was close the entire way and both players shot terrific. However, when the smoke cleared, Saez had claimed an 8-6 win to force a final and deciding race to 6 set for the title. This match proved to be just as exciting and remained close the entire way. In the end however, it was Stottlemyer who came out on top by a score of 6-4. The completed bracket is posted on the Results Page.
Other notable results of the event include the top female finisher, the 2nd Chance Tournament and the Break & Run contest. Seven (7) females: Pauline Mattes, Ann Reynolds, Shanna Lewis, Cheryl Sporleder, Carrie Ann Aycock, Jackie Rivera and Euginia Gyftopoulas competed in the event in which the top placing female would earn a $125 cash prize. In the end, Gyftopoloulas prevailed to take home top female honors and the $125 cash prize.
The Break & Run contest, which had a payout of $230 per ball, was conducted on Saturday night. Mitch Sutphin had the winning ticket and the opportunity at the cash. However, he elected to have Brandon Shuff shoot on his behalf. Everyone crowded the table as Shuff plowed the 10-ball rack but nothing found a pocket. The total purse will progressively roll into the next event for a total payout of $260 per ball!
Finally, fourteen (14) players showed up on Sunday to compete in the 2nd Chance Tournament. After being eliminated early on Saturday, Steve Lingafelter showed up to shoot fantastic and claim the $150 cash prize. Coming in 2nd was David Choi who earned $100, followed by Larry Kressel in 3rd winning $50. The completed bracket is posted on the Results Page.
The Action Pool Tour would like to thank all of the players who came out to participate.
